304/304L Stainless Steel

Both 304 stainless steel and 304L stainless steel provide a general purpose stainless steel with good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, to many organic and inorganic chemicals and to food and beverages.

Our in-house processing capabilities allow us to process stainless steel to your exact requirements.

The Difference Between 304 and 304L

The difference between 304 and 304L stainless steel is that 304L has a .03 max carbon and is good for welding whereas 304 has a mid range level of carbon.

304 and 304L are austenitic alloys, which means that a nonmagnetic solid solution of ferric carbide or carbon in iron is used in giving this stainless steel its corrosion-resistant properties.

Properties and Uses

These alloys contain chromium and nickel, as well as carbon, to provide good forming and welding properties, corrosion and oxidation resistance, toughness in low temperatures, ease of fabrication, and attractive appearance.

These 304 and 304L stainless steel products are used for tanks, tools, food industry machinery and appliances, architectural trim, filtration screens, and fasteners in corrosive marine environments.

316/316L Stainless Steel

Both 316 and 316L stainless steel provide an extra level of resistance to atmospheric corrosion, to many organic and inorganic chemicals and to food and beverages.

The Difference Between 316 and 316L Stainless Steel

The difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel is that 316L has a .03 max carbon and is good for welding whereas 316 has a mid range level of carbon.

316 and 316L are austenitic alloys, meaning that these stainless steel products gain corrosion resistance from use of a nonmagnetic solid solution of ferric carbide or carbon in iron in the manufacturing process.

In addition to chromium and nickel, these alloys contain molybdenum, which also makes them more corrosion resistant. Even greater corrosion resistance is delivered by 317L, in which molybdenum content increases to 3 to 4% from the 2 to 3% found in 316 and 316L.

Properties and Uses of 316 and 316L Stainless Steel

These alloys are known for their excellent welding properties, joined by both fusion and resistance processes. The 316L low carbon version is preferred in corrosive environments. It is important to make sure that copper and zinc do not become contaminants at the site of welds, as this can create cracking.

It is common to fabricate 316 and 316L into many different shapes. They may be formed on equipment similar to carbon steel, and are readily blanked and pierced. Excellent malleability means they perform well in deep drawing, spinning, stretching and bending.

317L Stainless Steel

317L is similar to 316 stainless steel but provides improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion, to many organic and inorganic chemicals and to food and beverages. 317L’s molybdenum content increases to 3 to 4% from the 2 to 3% found in 316 and 316L.

Uses of 317L Stainless Steel

This product is most commonly used in plants with recirculated processed water such as pulp and paper mills, ink manufacturing equipment, chemical processing equipment, and pollution control systems.

904L Stainless Steel

904L stainless steel combines molybdenum and copper with iron for tremendously increased resistance to reducing acids like sulphuric acid. It stands up extremely well to chlorides in the environment for low pitting and crevice corrosion, as well as stress corrosion cracking.

Grade 904L stainless steel is one of many stainless steel grades that can be purchased at Tampa Bay Steel.

The “L” in 904L stands for Low Carbon, specifically, that carbon added to the alloy represents .03 percent or less. This means that 904L has very good welding properties. It is also an austenitic alloy, which means that a nonmagnetic solid solution of ferric carbide or carbon in iron is used to increase corrosion resistance.

Properties and Uses of 904L Stainless Steel

904L cannot be hardened by heat treatment. You can weld 904L stainless using any standard method, but it is susceptible to hot cracking. It can be machined but does not machine well.

Common applications take advantage of 904L’s corrosion resistance. These include acid processing plants, pulp and paper operations, equipment for cooling seawater, oil refining, and environmental equipment.

The chemical processing industry makes extensive use of 904L stainless steel due to its broad corrosion resistance. Among 904L stainless steel suppliers, Tampa Bay Steel has the largest 904L plate inventory in Florida.
